04 Tournament Guidelines

We will be playing the latest Warhammer 40,000 edition rules, points, and the rules in the Event Companion Pack, Chapter Approved, Warhammer 40,000 app and the Munitorum Field Manual.

Army Selection

  • Army size: 2000-point "Strike Force" army
  • All current FAQs found on Warhammer-Community.com that are released at least 10 days before the event will apply. Any FAQs released after this will be addressed at the time
  • Any codex or supplement released within 14 days of list submission, or that isn't readily available off the shelf in a Games Workshop store, will not be valid to use at the event
  • Only units with a points cost in the latest Munitorum Field Manual are permitted. Models that aren't currently released won't be permitted, and conversions of them won't be allowed. Legends units are not permitted.
  • Codexes without an FAQ by list submission may receive a "house" FAQ to address obvious issues before official publication — see the Event FAQ Document.
  • Rules will be addressed using the Codex or index, Faction Packs, Warhammer 40,000 app, and any other relevant FAQs

List Submission / Checking

  • All lists must be submitted by the Sunday before the event on BCP, at midnight
  • Your list must contain your Faction, Detachments, Available Dispositions, Chosen Disposition, Warlord, and any pregame requisition options such as attaching characters, enhancements, upgrades and the like.
  • Your list must be fully legible. Large copy pastes with bad formatting or irrelevant information maybe be penalised in the same way as not submitting anything. We recommend the Warhammer 40,000 app format.
  • Your faction must be set on BCP and has to match the list
  • After submission closes, you may be assigned at least 1 list to check of the same faction. You'll be required to submit an approval or flag any errors found. If a list is incorrect, a judge will contact you to resolve it
  • Failure to submit a list on time, or failure to check a list, results in a –10VP per game that you would otherwise receive for being fully painted

Missions & Gaming

  • Missions are selected using your chosen Disposition with your opponent, from the Chapter Approved Mission Pack. The layout used will be announced by the T.O per round.
  • Both players are responsible for tracking their own score — the War Journal function in the Warhammer 40,000 App is highly recommended.
  • Once a game concludes, all models stay in place and you fill your score in on BCP. Speak to a T.O. if there's a discrepancy
  • Once a score is logged and agreed, it cannot be changed
  • For a "bye," or if an opponent is more than 15 minutes late, the present player receives an "average win score" for that round (an average of their score so far, or of all winners if it's round one). The opponent scores zero. We make every effort to find a bye game where possible
  • To concede early, speak to a judge — it will usually be treated the same as if the conceding player had been tabled at that point

05 Miniature Validity

Whilst we know time can be an issue for painting, we pride ourselves on having some of the best-looking events in the country. All models should be painted in a matching scheme and be clear from across the table. All models must be fully built and painted, with basing material in a matching scheme.

We do not allow proxies or count-as for any model, and conversions must have correct weapons and must be approved first by emailing HellstormWargaming@gmail.com.

  • We don't state a "3 colours minimum," but we expect a reasonable approach to painting
  • I.e. — does the model look anything like the examples pictured below? The first two are acceptable, the last one is NOT. This includes the base, which must have some sort of texture or theme to it
Examples of acceptably painted and based miniatures
Examples of the painting standard expected for tournament entry.

Third Party Stand-Ins / 3D Printing

"Third Party Stand-Ins" are permitted — where a player uses an alternative type of model that's quite clear and representative of what it will be used as (this doesn't mean a plasma weapon can stand in for a melta weapon, for example). 3D prints are permitted as long as they follow the above rules.

Should any of your models not meet the above criteria, you will be penalised and asked to remove them.

Failure to comply results in a Yellow Card (0pt game). Multiple Yellows result in a Red Card (12-month ban).

07 Streaming & Photography

We sometimes live stream our events via our own YouTube channel, Hellstorm Wargaming. As part of the event, you may be asked to appear on the stream in the form of an interview or by having your game streamed.

We have covered events around the world, and you'll be in very safe hands — able to show off the best hobby and sportsmanship across the globe. We may also film parts of the event, and photography may be taken. You, your army, or a game you play may be used in some form online later down the line.

If you don't wish to appear on the live stream or social media, please contact Mikey before the event. HellstormWargaming@gmail.com.

08 Terrain

What terrain do you have?

You'll play on a battle mat and a tournament-ready battlefield specifically designed for 11th Edition Warhammer 40,000. More info can be found in the Terrain Key.

The layouts can be found in the Event Companion Pack. We've added 15 minutes to each game to allow time for players to work together to rearrange terrain before starting their game.

09 Pairings & Timing

Pairings & Rankings

  • First-round pairings are totally random and determined by BCP — this avoids playing a teammate in round 1
  • After Round 1, pairings are decided by Wins > Win Path > Random
  • Rankings are decided by Wins > Battle Points. If 2 players are tied exactly, Strength of Schedule is considered

Chess Clocks & Round Timings

Since players set up terrain before playing, each round allows 14 minutes to set up the board, then 2 hours 46 minutes to play the game. It's the player's responsibility to ensure games are played in a timely manner, with both players completing 5 turns each.

We advise using a chess clock and splitting time to 1 hour 23 minutes each if you think you may struggle. A chess clock won't be provided, as there are many free phone apps available. If you're bringing an army with 100+ models, it's expected that you provide one for your games.

Judges will call out time remaining (e.g. "1 hour left, you should be on Battle Round 3!"). If you're behind, or don't manage 5 turns due to timeout, speak to a judge as soon as possible.

10 Code of Conduct

Please remember that the purpose of the event is to have fun as well as trying to win your games. It's very important that all players enjoy their games, we strongly encourage playing in the spirit of the game and not being "that guy."

Our code of conduct is based on many years of experienced judging — please familiarise yourself with it prior to the event so you know what to expect, and what your opponent should expect from you.You can read it here for a detailed process of our judge program.

If you believe your opponent is playing slowly deliberately to gain an advantage, try to resolve the issue with them directly first. If that conversation doesn't help, contact a judge.

If a player has more than one game that doesn't reach a natural conclusion — i.e. it doesn't finish turn 5 before time expires — they'll have points deducted from their tournament score. Where this is found to be deliberate, additional penalties may apply.

11 Penalties & Fouls

A detailed breakdown of our judging process can be found in the Code of Conduct document. Should a player be punished for a foul, a judge or T.O. will explain the issue privately, and they may be issued a warning. If the infraction is serious or a repeat infraction, the player receives a Yellow Card.

Once received, the player scores 0 points for the ranking in the next round and automatically loses it. They're also not permitted to win any prizes for gaming, painting, or sportsmanship at that event. Affected parties may be notified of the situation.

Two Yellow Cards within 12 months result in a Red Card.

The player is removed from pairings, asked to leave the event, and receives a 12-month ban from any future Hellstorm Wargaming event, starting from the date of the second Yellow Card.

Hellstorm Wargaming would like to thank you for your support and attendance, and wishes you the best of luck in our event — may the dice gods be with you.
